Zone-by-zone intensification, all four detection eras

Zone Lab

Research Question

Where, in which detection eras, and under which storms does a hurricane tend to intensify or weaken as it moves through Florida's approach corridors? Same interpolation method throughout: per-cell average wind speed change (kt per step), inverse-distance-weighted from 3,069individual track-step transitions across 125storm-era entries drawn from hintfl.com's authoritative storms.json, covering full storm tracks (approach, landfall, and post-landfall legs -- e.g. a storm crossing Florida into the Gulf and making a second landfall is followed all the way through), masked to each zone's own footprint using only the currently-selected points. Blue = weakening, tan/neutral = flat, red = intensifying.
Data quality is genuinely uneven across eras, not a uniform "old vs. new" split -- tap for detail
Validated against the NOAA/AMS Atlantic Hurricane Database Reanalysis Project's published phase boundaries (Landsea et al. 2004a; 2008 reanalysis) and wireless-ship-telegraphy adoption history. Pre-1911: ship reports and land stations only, reconstructed via the Fernandez-Partagas & Diaz method. 1911-1943: station data plus COADS ship network, decades before aircraft or satellite. 1944-1967: aircraft reconnaissance era, pre-radar/pre-satellite. 1968-present: radar and satellite tracking. A zone's hatching (insufficient sample) is computed live from whichever storms are currently checked — toggle an era off and watch zones that were solid re-hatch as their sample drops below 5 points, or vice versa.

Unchecking a phase here hides those storms from the checkbox lists above AND removes them from the map, even if their era checkbox is still checked. A storm's own checked/unchecked state is remembered while it's hidden -- re-checking its phase brings it back exactly as you left it. The ONI record used to classify phase only goes back to 1950; storms before that are grouped as "Pre-ONI" rather than guessed at.

What "Metric" and "Weighting" mean -- tap for detail

Wind speed is the map's original metric (kt/step). Pressure is sign-corrected so positive still means intensifying (pressure FALLING), matching the wind convention -- never read a positive pressure number as "pressure went up." Pressure coverage is far sparser than wind (roughly 65% of all track points across the dataset have no recorded pressure at all, concentrated pre-1911), so expect more hatched/insufficient zones under Pressure, especially in older eras -- that's a real property of the source data, not a bug in this toggle.

Observation-weighted is the map's original method -- a storm that loops or stalls near one spot contributes many points there and can dominate that area's color. Storm-balanced first averages each storm's own nearby points, then averages those per-storm results equally, so one slow/looping storm no longer outweighs several storms that each just passed through once. Neither is "more correct" -- they answer different questions (what did the raw observations show vs. what did each storm, on average, do). Which zones count as "insufficient sample" (the hatched pattern) is unaffected by this toggle -- that gate is still based on point count, not storm count.

Per-zone numbers behind the map above. A track step counts toward a zone here ONLY if that exact point falls inside it -- a stricter rule than the map's own smoothed interpolation, so these counts will not match the map's sample sizes exactly; both rules are legitimate for what they're each for. RI% (wind only -- rapid intensification is inherently a wind concept, no analogue is computed for pressure) is the share of steps whose wind change normalizes to at least 30kt per 24 hours. Every mean/median below is shown both ways -- observation-weighted (every step counts once) and storm-balanced (every storm counts once) -- same distinction as the map's own weighting toggle above. Pressure coverage is far sparser than wind (roughly 65% of all track points have no recorded pressure, concentrated pre-1911) -- expect smaller samples and more "no qualifying steps" under Pressure.
